10 Mistakes You Should Stop Making When You Travel

Traveling can be an exciting adventure, but it’s important to avoid certain mistakes that can hinder your experience. In this article, we’ll uncover the top 10 travel mistakes and provide you with valuable tips to ensure a smoother and more enjoyable journey. From booking flights at the right time to maximizing your rewards, we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive in and discover how you can make your next trip a memorable one.

We’re here to tell you the right things and give you some tips on how to make your next trip easier … and maybe cheaper, too. Here are the top 10 things that travelers often mess up, and how to fix them.

1. Waiting Too Long To Book a Flight Deal

When you find a good price for a flight, don’t wait: book it right away. Ask questions later.

Flight prices change all the time as people book some flights and airlines change others. The really good deals don’t last very long. So that cheap flight you find on Google Flights or in your email from Thrifty Traveler Premium might not be available later.

This is especially true when it comes to booking flights with points and miles. Once all the seats for booking with miles are taken, they’re usually gone for good. So when Delta offers really low rates for flights to New Zealand, like only 37,000 SkyMiles roundtrip, you need to book it as soon as possible.

If you wait too long, that amazing deal could go up to 170,000 SkyMiles or more.

You have 24 hours after booking to decide if you can actually go on the trip, or cancel it and get your money back. The government says airlines have to refund any fare for flights to, from, or within the U.S. within 24 hours of buying the ticket – but only if you book directly with the airline. It can be even better if you use points: Many airlines like American, Delta, and United let you cancel almost any award booking and get your miles (and the taxes and fees) back for free.

And don’t worry if the price goes down even more after you book: You can still take advantage of the lower fare. Most big U.S. airlines got rid of change fees during the pandemic, so you can change (or cancel and rebook) your reservation if the fare goes down – and keep the difference. You won’t get cash back, but you can get a voucher or credit for future travel.

    2. Using Expedia or Kayak to Search for Flights

Before anything else, open up Google Flights on your computer and start searching for flights there. It’s a really good search engine that helps you find the best price, and you can buy the ticket directly from the airline. Almost all airlines list their fares on Google Flights, so you can look through lots of flights and prices – including taxes.

Google Flights has some cool features that you can’t find anywhere else to help you find the cheapest flights.

If you’re not sure where you want to go, Google Flights Explore will show you the cheapest places you can fly from your home airport. You can use the baggage allowance filter to see if your flight lets you bring carry-ons or checked bags. Set up price alerts for specific dates and destinations so you know when prices drop – or change your existing flight to save even more.

You can still compare the prices you find on Google Flights with online travel agencies (OTAs) like Kayak and Expedia to make sure you’re getting the best deal. But those websites make money by taking a part of the airfare, so sometimes the fare can be higher. It’s best to check directly with the airline.

      3. Not Checking Nearby Airports

Don’t limit yourself to one airport when you’re searching for flights. If you live in a big city with multiple airports, search for flights from all of them. Sometimes you’ll find a cheaper or more convenient flight from a different airport.

For example, if you live in New York City, you should check flights from all three airports: John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The same applies to other cities like Chicago (ORD and MDW), Los Angeles (LAX, SNA, LGB, and BUR), and Washington, D.C. (IAD and DCA).

You can search for flights from multiple airports using Google Flights. Just click on the “Multiple destinations” option and enter the airports you want to search. This way, you can compare prices and choose the most convenient option.

        4. Overpacking

When it comes to packing, less is more. Overpacking can lead to unnecessary stress and extra costs, such as baggage fees or overweight charges.

Instead, focus on packing essential items and versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched. Plan your outfits ahead of time and try to pack items that serve multiple purposes. This will help you save space and ensure you have everything you need without going overboard.

Additionally, consider doing laundry during your trip instead of packing excessive amounts of clothing. Many accommodations offer laundry facilities or you can find nearby laundromats. This way, you can pack lighter and have fresh clothes whenever needed.

          5. Not Researching Local Customs and Etiquette

Every destination has its own customs and etiquette norms. Not researching and respecting these cultural aspects can lead to misunderstandings or unintentionally offending locals.

Before traveling to a new country or region, take some time to learn about their customs, traditions, and etiquette. Familiarize yourself with basic greetings, appropriate dress codes, dining etiquette, and any other important cultural practices.

By showing respect and understanding, you’ll have a more enjoyable and immersive travel experience. It also helps foster positive interactions with locals and promotes cultural exchange.

            6. Overplanning and Overscheduling

While it’s important to have a general idea of the places you want to visit and activities you’d like to do, overplanning can limit your flexibility and add unnecessary stress to your trip.

Allow for some free time in your itinerary to explore spontaneously, discover hidden gems, or simply relax and enjoy the destination. Embrace the unexpected and leave room for new experiences.

Consider prioritizing quality over quantity. Instead of rushing from one tourist attraction to another, focus on immersing yourself in the local culture, interacting with locals, and savoring the unique aspects of the destination.

Remember, travel is not just about ticking off sights from a list but also about creating meaningful memories and connections.

              7. Neglecting Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is often overlooked, but it can be a lifesaver in unexpected situations. From flight cancellations to medical emergencies, having adequate coverage can provide peace of mind and protect you from financial burdens.

Research different travel insurance options and choose a policy that suits your needs. Look for coverage for trip cancellation, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, baggage loss, and other potential risks.

Read the policy details carefully to understand what’s included and excluded. Pay attention to any pre-existing condition exclusions or limitations. It’s also advisable to compare prices and reviews to ensure you’re selecting a reputable insurance provider.

Remember to carry a copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers with you during your trip.

                8. Ignoring Local Transportation Options

Many travelers rely solely on taxis or rental cars without considering local transportation alternatives. Depending on the destination, using public transportation, such as buses, trains, or trams, can be more affordable and convenient.

Research the local transportation options available at your destination. Look for information on subway systems, bus routes, or bike-sharing programs. Utilizing local transportation not only saves money but also provides an opportunity to experience the city like a local.

                  9. Overlooking Travel Documentation Requirements

Ensure you have all the necessary travel documents well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications. Different countries have different entry requirements, including visas, passports, or vaccination certificates.

Check the entry requirements of your destination and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. If a visa is required, apply for it in advance to prevent any delays or issues.

Additionally, if you plan to drive in another country, familiarize yourself with the local driving regulations and obtain an international driving permit if necessary.

                    10. Not Informing Your Bank and Credit Card Companies

Before embarking on your trip, notify your bank and credit card companies about your travel plans. Banks often monitor suspicious transactions and may freeze your account if they detect unexpected activity, assuming it’s fraudulent.

Informing them in advance helps prevent any unnecessary inconvenience or card blocks during your trip. Provide them with your travel dates and destinations to ensure smooth usage of your cards abroad.

Some banks also offer travel-friendly services, such as no foreign transaction fees or international customer support. Inquire about these features and consider using cards that offer benefits specifically tailored for travelers.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can enhance your travel experience, save money, and ensure a smoother journey.
